My Gallery
This is where I will be posting my art projects throughout the semester.
Identity Collage Portrait
For this project, we were asked to create a piece of art that was a representation of us. The picture I worked with was a picture that my friend had taken of me for fun. I love this picture because it shows part of my personality. I am a very smiley, caring, and kind person and I feel that this picture represents that well. I tried to match my shirt with the one in the picture, that is why there are multiple shades of red.
At first, I didn’t think that I could come up with a background to match my story. Then, I saw these flowers in a magazine and knew exactly what to do. The reason these flowers were perfect is that they represent my story in such an amazing way. Yes, I love flowers but it means so much more. Since elementary school, I have always been very shy and timid and not willing to try new things. Recently, I have grown as a person so much. I’m finally becoming the person I want and strive to be. I am outgoing and willing. Just like a flower starts to grow and develop into something beautiful, so have I.
Most of the words that I put on my picture are all words that I strive to be like. Every day, I try to be a better person than the day before. Some of the other words like fight, farmhouse, and anxiety have stories that go along with them. I chose the word fight when I saw it because I am now a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and I have been in this martial art for around 10 years. I also chose the word farmhouse because it reminds me of my home. I’ve grown up living on my grandparent's farm, and I love it. The last word that I put on was anxiety. I put this word on because I deal with some anxiety in my life and I have always struggled with this. I have always been a big worrier. Recently, not so much. I feel that I have amazing friends and family that have helped me through difficult times.
On my project, one thing that went good was my hair. I found some great magazine clippings I put them on very well to represent me. I have naturally wavy brunette hair and I represented that very well. My background also went very well. It turned out just how I was envisioning it. At first, the face went a little rough and I didn’t like the way it looked. I felt like I couldn’t find enough matching skin tones. In the end, I think they all blended well together and it worked.
Overall, I loved doing this project because it could be taken in so many ways. This project allows everyone to represent a part of them and show what they think of themselves.

Real Anatomy of Technology
For this art project, my class was asked to create a project including human anatomy and technology. At first, I struggled a lot with what to do for this project. I had looked at many examples over and over, not knowing what to do. Nothing had really spoken to me. One day, I had been free drawing on a piece of paper in another class. I had drawn a rough sketch of a phone and a heart and I knew that I needed to do that for art.
In my art project, you can see that there is a big phone with veins connected to different social media apps and a human heart implanted into the phone. After my rough sketch of this image, it spoke to me in many ways. This image that I drew doesn’t look like much, but if you really look, it means so many things. Nowadays, many people are addicted to their technology, they feel that they can’t live without it. They only depend on their phones. This is why I decided to implant the heart into the phone. I also decided that I would make the phone one of the most recent ones because it shows how much technology has changed. Many people would say that their phone is their life, just like the heart is the source of a person's life. Along with the heart comes the veins. I drew the veins connecting to the apps because that is what most people use their phones for, social media. Social media seems like it has taken over many people's lives. Most people would say that they care more about what people over social media think than in real life. What I tried to get across in this image is that it is so easy to get addicted to your phone and the apps that come with it. Technology has changed so much, even from when I was a kid. When talking to my mom about how technology, she had shared a statement that really spoke to me. She had said that technology is a great tool, but when there are no limits, it is unnecessary. When there are no limits, people become addicted.
Overall, I feel like I did really well with this project. The shading was really hard for me to do at first, but after practicing it felt a lot better. Some of the darker colors were more difficult to blend and even out. I had a lot of fun creating this piece. It was fun to learn more techniques on how to use colored pencils in a more artistic way.

The Value of Words
Some artists chose to use text, typography, and semantics in their art because it’s a way of expressing themselves and portraying the message of the art that is shown. For example, some artists may use typography because their style is more technical. For other artists, including myself, they might like to put their own handwriting and text in because it makes it unique to their personality. It’s all about what the artist wants to portray to the viewers. For me, I prefer to put my own handwriting into my pieces because I feel that it represents me the best. I feel like putting words into art has been showing up more and more over time. Seeing the artworks from different centuries, I can tell that they didn’t usually put words into their art, it was mostly images. It is becoming a more modern thing.
For this project, we had to create a piece of art with two things. A bunch of words and a pencil. I decided to do a self-portrait for this project. The reference picture I used was a very recent picture that I got taken for my senior pictures. It is a serious, still, and calm image of me in my Track and Field uniform holding a discus. I decided to use this picture for my project because I felt that it represents a side of me that I haven’t shown in my art. There is a side to my personality that is very calm and serious. This image also represents me very well because this will be my sixth-year Track and Field. Track and Field has really brought me out of my shell and made me not only physically stronger but mentally stronger.
My artwork consists of only words. I decided to use words that described my experiences with Track and Field. For my body I used words like throw, jumping, hurdles, sprinting, and long-distance, confident, strong, lift. For my uniform, I used the word Falcons because that is my school’s mascot. For my hair, I used ‘run with the wind’ because it reminds me of races where your hair flies everywhere. I had some trouble thinking of a background that I could add to this piece to make it pop. In the original photo, the background is all black. I decided to start light and get darker as I went to show the ring of light around me that disappears into the darkness. I always like to look at motivational and positive quotes and so I incorporated that into my background. The words in the back are made up of a poem called ‘The Athletes Creed’, it has always fueled me to do my best even if its outside of my sports.
Overall, I really had fun making this project. I felt like I could express myself in so many ways just by using only words in my project. It was very cool to see the end result of all the thickness and darkness of the words blend together.

Printmaking
My next art project was printmaking. My class and I were told that we could carve any design into our plate that we wanted to. We had to make six editions of the print for our final product. Printmaking came really easy to me, I finished in only a few class periods. I thought that printmaking was so much fun. I loved carving my design into the plate because it was so satisfying.
For my prints, I made a person and their dog standing in the rain with an umbrella. I saw an image close to this and it really stuck with me. Every other image I looked at for reference didn’t touch me the way this image did. Throughout my life, I have had lots of pets. Currently, I have three dogs. I decided to use this image for my prints because it reminds me of all my pets that have died and are still alive. I loved the way that my prints turned out.

Art for a Cause
For my last project we had to create an art piece that represents a modern day problem. I struggled to find a topic that I could create an art piece on. I have many passions about social issues but nothing too extreme. I knew that I wanted to create a piece that had paint in it because I love to paint. I had thought about this project for multiple days. One thing that came to mind was the issues in school. I really tried to portray these messages though this art piece that I created.
In my art piece there is a teacher in a classroom pointing at the chalk board. I had taken this picture in one of my classrooms and I modeled as the teacher. The chalk board says "Rule #1 Do not be yourself." I chose to put this message on there for multiple reasons. I feel that it is important to be true to yourself and show the real you at school. Nobody should have to feel like they need to hide or put a mask on when they come to school. Many times friends and teachers don't even notice when a student has something going on because the student feels a need to put a mask on and act like everything is okay. My hope for this piece is that it will show people that some students are scared to show their real self because they will get made fun of. I hope that it can help people be more accepting and help uplift others in school so they can be their true selves. This piece is very important to me because even I have felt like I need to put a mask on at times.
